Step-by-Step Guide
Once you have started in your group, begin your doctoral process and complete steps 1–4 within your first year.
1. Admission as a doctoral student via the University of Vienna Admission Office

What you need to do
Apply for admission via u:space (year-round).
Submit your complete application (processing takes up to 4 weeks).
Pay the Tuition fee
Renew your enrollment every semester!
Check the Center for Doctoral Studies website for more information (e.g. online sessions, consultations).

Why this is important
Enrolment is required to start your doctoral curriculum course work.
- Once registered at the University of Vienna you can be affiliated with us - the Vienna Doctoral School in Chemistry (DoSChem).
2. Admission to Vienna Doctoral School in Chemistry

What you need to do
Contact us from the Vienna Doctoral School in Chemistry (DoSChem) upon arrival to receive initial instructions and admittance paperwork:
- Apply for DoSChem admission: deadlines March 1st and October 1st
- Sign Code of Conduct
- Attend Onboarding event
- Contact DoSChem: dos.chem(at)univie.ac.at

3. Public Presentation (FÖP) via Study Service Center Chemistry

What you need to do
The requirement “Public Presentation (FÖP) within 12 months” is included in the job contract (Beiblatt) and DoSChem code of conduct.
Schedule your Public Presentation (FÖP) within the first year via SSC (Study Service Center Chemistry).
- Public Presentation Dates: held once a month on Fridays during the semester, at noon (12:00), PLAN IN ADVANCE (there is a 4-month "gap" in summer)

Why this is important
According to the Statutes, the topic of the doctoral thesis has to be approved by the directorate of studies (DSPL) within 12 months.
The approval is based on the research proposal and its public presentation.
New doctoral candidates and their research topics are introduced to the faculty.
4. Doctoral Thesis Agreement via Study Service Center Chemistry

What you need to do
You have to sign the doctoral thesis agreement after a successful public presentation, after 3 months of the latest.
Thesis agreement is signed between the student, supervisor, and Studienpräses (represented by the Director of Doctoral Studies).
Include Responsible Conduct of Research training into your agreement.

It defines the rights, obligations, and requirements for all participants, as well as the timeline for completing your PhD thesis project.
