On February 18th 2025, the Embracing Diversity in STEM symposium was hosted in the main ceremonial hall of the University of Vienna, a full-day event dedicated to exploring the role of diversity in science and academia. Organized by the Doctoral Schools of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Earth and Space Sciences, the event brought together students, researchers, and faculty members to engage in discussions on how to foster a more inclusive scientific community.

Keynote Speakers

The symposium featured a keynote address by Prof. Anna Danielsson (Stockholm University), followed by talks from Ass.-Prof. Chi Zhang (Institute for Meteorology and Geophysics), Prof. Mathea Sophia Galanski (Institute of Inorganic Chemistry), Dr. Shantanu Dave (Faculty of Mathematics) and Prof. Nergis Mavalvala (MIT, School of Science), each providing insights into their research and experiences with diversity in STEM.

Speakers shared personal experiences and structural challenges in academia, emphasizing the importance of diversity across cultural backgrounds, gender identities, LGBTQ+ representation, and individuals with disabilities.

The panel discussion allowed for a deeper exploration of these issues, focusing on actionable ways to address systemic barriers in STEM. To close the day, the science slam provided an engaging platform for showcasing cutting-edge research while fostering connections across faculties.

We were thrilled to see such strong participation from across the university and beyond. Thank you to everyone who contributed, attended, and helped make this symposium a success. Let’s keep the conversation going and continue working toward a more inclusive STEM community!
